چکیده

Diffuse γ-ray radiation in galaxies is produced by cosmic ray interactions with the interstellar medium. With the completion of EGRET observations, the only extragalactic object from which there has been a positive detection of diffuse γ-ray emission is the Large Magellanic Cloud. We systematically estimate the expected diffuse γ-ray flux from Local Group galaxies, and determine their detectability by new generation γ-ray observatories such as GLAST. For each galaxy, the expected γ-ray flux depends only on its total gas content and its cosmic ray flux. We present a method for calculating cosmic ray flux in these galaxies in terms of the observed rate of supernova explosions, where cosmic ray acceleration is believed to take place. The difficulty in deriving accurate supernova rates from observational data is a dominant uncertainty in our calculations. We estimate the γ-ray flux for Local Group galaxies and find that our predictions are consistent with the observations for the LMC and with the observational upper limits for the Small Magellanic Cloud and M31. Both the Andromeda galaxy, with a flux of ∼ 1.0× 10−8 photons sec−1 cm−2 above 100 MeV, and the SMC, with a flux of ∼ 1.7× 10−8 photons sec−1 cm−2 above 100 MeV, are expected to be observable by GLAST. M33 is at the limit of detectability with a flux of ∼ 0.11 × 10−8 sec−1 cm−2. Other Local Group galaxies are at least two orders of magnitude below GLAST sensitivity. The Guaranteed Gamma-ray Background

The diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGRB) above 100 MeV encodes unique information about high-energy processes in the universe. Numerous sources for the EGRB have been proposed, but the two systems which are certain to make some contribution are active galaxies (blazars) as well as normal galaxies. In this paper, we evaluate the contribution to the background from both sources. The ...

The Spectrum of Diffuse Cosmic Hard X-Rays Measured with HEAO–1

The spectrum of the diffuse isotropic component of cosmic X-rays over the 13–180 keV range was determined by the UCSD/MIT Hard X-Ray and GammaRay instrument (HEAO A4) on the High Energy Astronomical Observatory–1 (HEAO–1). The instrument consists of a complex of actively shielded and collimated scintillation counters, including the Low Energy Detector set from which the data reported here were ...

Clusters of galaxies as a storage room for cosmic rays

It is demonstrated that clusters of galaxies are able to keep cosmic rays for a time exceeding the age of the Universe. This phenomenon reveals itself by the production of the diffuse flux of high energy gamma and neutrino radiation due to the interaction of the cosmic rays with the intracluster gas. The produced flux is determined by the cosmological density of baryons, Ωb, if a large part of ...

Search for TeV Radiation from Selected Local Group Galaxies

Some candidate dark matter particles, such as neutralinos in supersymmetry, would annihilate producing GeV/TeV gamma rays. We report on recent observations of two dwarf spheroid galaxies, Draco, Ursa Minor, the compact elliptical galaxy M32, and the spiral galaxy M33 with the Whipple 10m gamma-ray telescope. No significant signal was found, and we derived upper limits for the gamma-ray flux fro...

Upper Limits to Fluxes of Neutrinos and Gamma-Rays from Starburst Galaxies

Loeb and Waxman have argued that high energy neutrinos from the decay of pions produced in interactions of cosmic rays with interstellar gas in starburst galaxies would be produced with a large enough flux to be observable. Here we obtain an upper limit to the diffuse neutrino flux from starburst galaxies which is a factor of ∼5 lower than the flux which they predict. Compared with predicted fl...
